Itinerary

  1. 1

Your route starts at one of Rotterdam's best-known spots. Architect Piet Blom's yellow cube houses sit tilted on poles, and they still look a little unreal. Around Blaak you can see how boldly this city builds. A great place to begin.

  2. 2

You'll smell the fresh croissants as soon as you walk in. Crave is run by Yunlai and Wiwi, who also opened Backyard and The Tea Lab. They don't just swap out animal products. They come up with flavours of their own. There's no fixed menu, so you never know exactly what's on the counter, from almond croissants to pistachio cruffins.

  3. 3

The only fully plant-based sushi spot in Rotterdam. Every roll is made when you order it. Nori is a real family business: dad works the wok, the middle son rolls the sushi, mum runs the floor and the eldest son, Zhen, runs the business side. They kept switching suppliers until they found the perfect avocado, and you can taste it.

  4. 4

Pass byA covered arcade full of businesses with a conscious approach: shops, places to eat and small local makers under one roof. Take a moment to wander around and see what you find.

  5. 5

In 2020, Ruby opened a supermarket that's fully plant-based. She takes her inspiration from Asian supermarkets, and the shelves are full of products you won't find anywhere else in the Netherlands. Think fish-free shrimp, Shawarmama and dozens of artisan cheeses. There's also a café inside the shop for a quick snack.

  6. 6

Pass byA former tropical swimming paradise on the river Maas, now a hub for entrepreneurs who turn waste into something new. What one business throws away, another uses as raw material. This is where you see Rotterdam working on the city of tomorrow.

  7. 7

Pass byRotterdam's oldest harbour, with historic ships, terraces and the White House (Witte Huis), once one of Europe's first skyscrapers. A nice spot to sit down for a while and take in the atmosphere.

  8. 8

Under the huge, colourful arch of the Markthal you'll find 55 Bombay Street. Founder Rani quit her office job to bring Indian street food to Rotterdam. Her team is all women, and they make everything by hand, from hundreds of samosas a week to their famous pani puri.

  9. 9

The world's largest restaurant chain with a fully plant-based menu. Stephen and Anouk discovered Copper Branch on holiday in France. They bought the rights from the owners in Canada and opened the first Dutch location in 2021. In Rotterdam, manager Odin likes to experiment with his own creations, like the croissant truffle burger.

  10. 10

Sweet treats without the junk. Founder Kim had a serious sweet tooth but wanted to eat healthier, so ten years ago she started experimenting in her own kitchen. Everything at SUE is plant-based, gluten-free and made without refined sugar. Most of the bites are raw and look like tiny works of art.

  11. 11

You finish at Rotown, one of Rotterdam's most loved music venues. Owner Jessica noticed that both visitors and bands kept asking for plant-based food. Together with Jurgen, who used to run the Vegetarische Snackbar, she started this kitchen. Roti, ramen, rendang and schnitzel, all made in-house. Even meat lovers admit it's at least as good as the real thing.
