Most cruise ships spend between six and ten hours alongside in Rotterdam, and the right excursion depends entirely on that window. With three to four hours, stay in the city: a harbour cruise past the skyline, the Markthal and Cube Houses, and the old Delfshaven district are all within easy reach. With five to six hours you can add the Euromast or a guided architecture walk, or make a fast trip out to the Kinderdijk windmills by waterbus. A full day of eight hours or more opens up a combined tour of Rotterdam with Delft or The Hague, or a relaxed loop through the countryside with time to spare before all-aboard.

Cruise Terminal Rotterdam sits on the Kop van Zuid, the redeveloped south bank, directly beneath the elegant Hotel New York — the former head office of the Holland America Line, from which generations of emigrants once sailed to New York. From the terminal it is a ten-minute walk across the Erasmus Bridge (locals call it 'the Swan') to the city centre, or a two-minute hop on the water taxi that darts across the river to the historic harbour. Trams and the metro stop close by, and Rotterdam Centraal — one of Europe's most striking modern stations — is fifteen minutes away, putting Amsterdam, Delft, The Hague and Gouda all within an easy train ride.

River cruise ships moor even closer, along the Boompjes and the Willemskade, a few minutes on foot from the Markthal and the cafés and galleries of the Witte de Withstraat.

Part of the appeal of a call at Rotterdam is how much of classic Holland lies within half an hour. The nineteen UNESCO-listed windmills of Kinderdijk — the largest concentration in the country — are a thirty-minute waterbus ride away and make an unforgettable half-day. Delft, with its canals, its Saturday market and the Royal Delft factory where the famous blue-and-white pottery is still hand-painted, is fifteen minutes by train. The Hague adds the Mauritshuis, home to Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, the seat of Dutch government at the Binnenhof, and the long North Sea beach at Scheveningen.
